Chapter 7: His Bed
"That your husband?" Tyler said.
He was still inside me, with his forehead against mine, and he said it very quietly.
"Ex-husband," I said. "Since Thursday."
"Does he text you a lot?"
"Never. I don't know what that was."
He lifted his head and looked at the phone lying face down by my ear.
A muscle moved in his jaw, once.
Then he eased out of me, and he found my robe on the floor and held it open so I could slide my arms in.
He did it carefully, with his eyes on the sleeves.
"Come to my place Wednesday," he said.
"Why Wednesday?"
"It's supposed to rain." He pulled his shirt on. "I'd like you to see your house from my side."
I did not understand that, so I said yes.
On Wednesday the rain came in at four and did not stop.
I crossed the side yard at nine at night with a pink umbrella that was no use.
I was soaked to the knees before I reached his steps.
He opened the door before I knocked.
His house was mine with the rooms reversed, the same 1998 colonial with the stairs on the other side.
There was a couch, a television on a milk crate, and a pair of work boots drying on newspaper in the hall.
It smelled like coffee and wet wool and him.
"You're all wet," he said.
"It's raining."
"I noticed."
He took the umbrella out of my hand and stood it in the corner, and then he took my wet cardigan off my shoulders.
I stood there in my sodden blouse, dripping on his floor, while he looked at me with his mouth slightly open.
