Chapter 8: Counting the Days
Tyler's POV
The flashlight went along the fence one board at a time.
I watched it from my bedroom window with my arm across Lena's bare back, and I did not move my hand.
"She's going to see the lamp," Lena whispered. "She's going to see us in the window."
"We're forty feet away in the dark."
"She's got a phone."
"Then let her point it," I said. "All she's going to get is the side of a house."
The beam stopped at the gap in the fence, where the two decks nearly touch.
It stayed there for a long time.
Then it swung out over the grass, found nothing, and went off toward the street, and a car door shut somewhere.
Lena's shoulders came down under my arm.
I kissed the top of her head, and we stayed at the window a while longer.
On Friday I put the work light up in my garage and raised the door.
I live in a rental.
The garage is where I keep my tools and a weight bench and the motorcycle my uncle sold me for nothing.
I cleared the floor and set a folding lawn chair in the middle of the concrete, facing the open door.
At nine she came across the grass in the dusk, in a blue sundress and bare feet, with her hair down.
She stopped at the edge of the driveway and looked at the chair.
"Is that for me?" she said.
"You said to set it up."
"I did," she said.
She walked in and sat down in it, with her knees together and her hands in her lap, and she looked up at me.
The work light hung over my head, bright and white, and I was standing in the middle of it.
Every part of me was lit.
"Shut the door?" I said, and I did not know why I said it.
"No," Lena said. "Leave it up."
I swallowed.
"Take your shirt off," she said.
I did.
I pulled it over my head and dropped it.
