Chapter 8: Counteroffer

I looked at the crushed carbon in her fist.

I looked at her face.

Margot had been pretty and mean my whole time with Truett, and I'd never once seen her scared.

She was scared now.

"That's very generous," I said. "No, thank you."

"Twenty-five."

"No, thank you."

"You don't have anything." Her voice went high. "It's a piece of carbon paper. You could have written that yesterday."

"I could have," I said. "I didn't."

I unlocked my car.

"Thank you for walking me out, Margot. Mind the step by the stairwell. It's slippery."

She said something at my back.

I didn't turn around for it.

I drove home with both hands on the wheel and didn't turn on the radio.

I thought she would go to a lawyer.

She went to Truett.

Tuesday class was on the cha-cha.

The bride was finally getting her feet right, and the whole class had stopped to clap for her.

Then the front door slammed so hard the mirrors rattled.

Nobody slams that door.

Truett stood in the doorway in his beige suit with his tie pulled loose.

His face was red to the ears.

"You threatened her?"

The music kept going.

Gussie reached over and turned it off.

"Good evening, Truett," I said.

"Don't good evening me. She called me from the garage. She was shaking so hard she couldn't talk."

He came across the floor in his work shoes, leaving marks on the wax.

"She said you cornered her and told her you'd ruin her."

"Is that what she said?"

"She said you've been stalking her since the birthday. The livestream. The basket at her office, in front of everybody. Posey, she's terrified of you."

Emmett stood up from the chair by the piano.
