Chapter 12: Striking Vehicle
I read the report standing barefoot on the cold concrete, with his shirt hanging past my knees.
The second page had a diagram.
Two small rectangles on a line labeled Hoan Bridge.
One of them had an arrow pointing at the back of the other.
The third page had a statement, signed.
Driver of Unit 1 states that his cell phone rang as he reached the crest of the bridge and that he looked at the screen. Driver states the road was glazed and that he could not stop in time.
I knew whose phone that was.
I knew whose hand had shaken on my wrist and whose coat had glass in the shoulder.
The kettle sat on the hot plate, and I forgot about the water.
I walked back to the shed, and climbed the ladder to the sloop, and went down into the cabin.
Gabe was still asleep with his arm flung over his eyes.
I put the folder on his chest.
"Wake up."
He opened his eyes.
He saw the cover, and I watched his whole body understand.
He sat up slowly, with the paper in his hand, and he did not say anything.
"Tell me," I said.
"Cora."
"This is the question. Tell me."
He set the folder on the bunk beside him.
When he looked up, he did not look away from me once.
"The hospital called at ten to ten," he said. "A nurse said my father had stopped breathing. I was already on the bridge, driving to him. I looked down at the phone for as long as it takes to read a name."
"And you hit me."
"I hit you from behind, at forty miles an hour. There was ice and I couldn't stop."
