Chapter 13: Say It Here
The bus let me off on Brady Street at ten to six, and I was wet to the skin.
Agnes saw me through the window of the shop and had the door open before I reached it.
She did not say mm.
She put me in the chair by the ovens, pulled off my boots, and wrapped my feet in a flour sack that was still warm from the rack.
"Hargrove?" she said.
"No."
"The boat man."
"Yes."
"Did he hurt you?"
I thought about it honestly, because she would know if I did not.
"He did," I said. "Not with his hands."
She nodded.
Then she put a cup of tea in my hands and went to flip the sign on the door.
The sign was still turned when the bell rang anyway.
Five regulars stood in a line at the counter for the last rye, and they all turned to look at the man in the charcoal overcoat who had come in behind them.
Dalton had never once set foot in this shop.
He took in the flour on the floor and the old mixer.
Then he put on the face he used for investors.
"Cora," he said. "Can we talk somewhere private?"
"No."
"I think you'll want it private."
"I think you want it private," I said. "Say it here."
He glanced at the regulars.
A woman at the front of the line, who had known me since I was fourteen, folded her arms.
Dalton lowered his voice a little and did not lower it enough.
"You've seen the invoice. I know what's in that report.
He put you in that car. He's been sleeping next to you for a month knowing it."
"Yes," I said. "He has."
That was not what Dalton had expected.
He blinked, and then he recovered.
He stepped closer with his hand out, palm up.
