Chapter 7: No Nuts
Marguerite ordered forty dozen petit fours from Agnes for her foundation dinner.
She did it on purpose.
"She wants you in that ballroom," Agnes said, over the phone invoice. "She wants him to see you in it. I'd say yes."
"She's my husband's mother."
"She's a woman who wants a front-row seat. Say yes."
So on Thursday evening I stood behind a long table in the Hargroves' hall at the Pfister, in a plain black dress and a bakery apron, setting out trays of lemon tarts.
Gabe carried the cakes.
He had turned up at the bakery at three, and said nothing about it, and loaded the van himself.
Now he stood at the back of the room by the service door, with his burned wrist healed to a faint pink line.
"You can go," I told him. "You've done your job."
"I'll wait."
"For what?"
"For you."
I felt the heat climb my neck.
Across the room, Dalton was working a circle of men in dark suits, and he saw me.
His laugh stopped.
He crossed the floor with a glass in his hand, and Lydia came with him, in green silk, one hand resting on the small curve under her dress.
She looked beautiful, radiant with triumphant confidence.
"Cora." Dalton set his glass on my table. "I'm told you're catering. How resourceful."
"Your mother hired the bakery."
"Of course she did." He smiled for the benefit of the room. "Come to the bar after. I'd like to talk to you about the lawsuit. Alone."
"Say it here."
"I'd rather not embarrass you."
"You already did."
Behind him, an investor's wife turned her head to listen.
