Chapter 17: Christmas
The next day Hesketh called me into the back room.
"Your driver quit," he said. "Family trouble in Fall River. He was very apologetic."
"I'll manage."
"My grandson has a man he trusts."
"I bet he does," I said. "The twins will drive me."
Hesketh studied me for a moment.
Then he let it go. Seven hundred thousand dollars buys a little patience, even from him.
The twins drove me everywhere after that, in their mother's rusted pickup with the heater stuck on high.
Every night at six, Mavis put a bowl of chowder on the counter at the end stool.
Every night at six-fifteen, she poured it back in the pot and said nothing.
On the twenty-third I took the early ferry to the mainland with a tired New Bedford lawyer Mavis found me.
The task force had an office in a gray building near the State House.
The attorney general's woman was in her fifties, with a gray bob and reading glasses on a chain.
"Miss Rendell. Sit down. You look like you're about to throw up."
"I'm pregnant. I always look like that."
