Chapter 25: Grand Jury
On the third of March I sat on a wooden bench outside a grand jury room in Boston with my notebook in my lap.
Not all eight. Just the one.
The year of the fire.
My New Bedford lawyer sat on one side of me, eating antacids. Zeke sat three benches down, not looking at me, because he was a witness too and wasn't allowed to.
Mavis had been told she couldn't come.
She'd come anyway and was in the lobby downstairs, telling a court officer about her blood pressure.
At five to nine the elevator opened.
Orson came out of it in a charcoal suit I'd never seen, with two lawyers and Emmeline on his arm.
He'd shaved. He'd had his hair cut. He looked polished, prosperous, and completely smug.
He saw me on the bench.
His eyes went to my stomach, which you couldn't miss anymore, and stayed there a second too long.
Then he smiled.
The old smile. Crooked.
"Ris. You look well."
"You look expensive."
Emmeline squeezed his arm.
"Don't talk to her, darling."
