Chapter 28: The Eleven O'Clock
Nobody moved.
The rain came in past her onto the linoleum.
"Stop him how?" I said.
"Go down there. He'll listen to you. He always..." She stopped. "He took the cash from the ticket safe. Everything. He said he'd send for me from Montreal."
"And you believed him."
"I put up his bail." Her mouth twisted. "Out of Daddy's accounts. Daddy doesn't know yet."
"He will."
"Please." She was shaking. "He's in a fish truck on the car deck. Under a tarp. He'll be gone in forty minutes."
I looked at her for a long time.
At the girl who'd filmed me in a dumpster.
At the girl who'd bought two cans of gas and signed her own name.
She wanted me on that boat.
Alone, in the rain, on the car deck, with a man who'd just lost everything.
Either she wanted him stopped, or she wanted me there when he wasn't.
I didn't care which.
"No," I said.
Her face went blank.
"You'd let him go?"
"I didn't say that."
I picked up the diner phone.
I called the attorney general's woman at home. She answered on the second ring.
Then I called the ferry captain.
I'd kept the Table's envelope for his harbor fees for eight years. He knew my voice.
"Hold the eleven o'clock at the slip," I said. "Don't drop the lines. There's a man in a fish truck on your car deck."
There was a long silence.
"Rendell's girl," he said.
"Yes."
"Holding," he said.
Zeke was already on his phone to the two troopers at the Alderwyn gate.
He looked at me over it.
"Stay here," he said. "Please."
"I'm not getting on the boat," I said. "I'm going to stand on the dock."
He thought about arguing.
He didn't.
The ferry terminal was two hundred feet from Mavis's door.
The eleven o'clock sat in the slip with its lights blazing, engines idling, the lines still on.
