Chapter 21: Cleared
Luke read the letter four times at the long table.
Then he folded it and put it in his chest pocket, behind the scene-shop card with October 31 on it.
"They want me in Ithaca on the twelfth of February," he said. "To stand there while they take it back."
"Do you want to go?"
He was quiet for a long time.
"I've never been back," he said. "I drive around it. There's a whole county I drive around."
"Then we'll drive through it."
The courtroom in Ithaca was small and old, with tall windows and a radiator that knocked.
It was snowing again outside, the wet heavy upstate kind.
Luke sat at the front table in his wedding suit.
I sat right behind him, close enough to touch his shoulder.
The crew filled the back two rows.
They had driven up at four in the morning in the shop's box truck, all fourteen of them.
They brought thermoses and a bag of my scones.
The welder had his tie on again.
Luke's mother sat beside me in her pink cardigan, holding my hand so hard my ring cut into my finger.
