Chapter 24: Entry Table
The entry table was oak, secondhand, with a drawer that stuck.
Lars carried it up three flights on his shoulder and set it by the door of my new apartment.
"Where?" he said.
"Right there."
"You're sure? It's the first thing people see."
"That's why."
He stepped back with his hands on his hips and looked at it.
It was plain and square, and it had nothing on it yet.
"Judson's was marble," I said.
"Judson's was ugly."
I laughed, and he grinned at me, and I thought how long it had been since I had laughed in a doorway.
The apartment had white walls, a kitchen the size of a closet, and a window with the lake in it.
The lease was on the kitchen counter.
I had signed it on Friday, at the leasing office, and watched the agent read my name upside down.
The E closed at the bottom, as it always had.
Lars went back down to the truck and came up again with a cardboard box under one arm.
He put it on the floor next to the table.
