Chapter 10: Lark Presents

Dear Lark,

I lost my job in August and I have not slept more than three hours a night since.

My husband says I should try a meditation app.

I don't want an app. I want somebody to tell me it's not my fault.

Awake in Auburn

On Thursday, Gordon handed that letter out to the whole staff.

He had printed it on cream paper, with a second page stapled behind it.

We sat around the big table while Marguerite read both pages, and the room went very quiet.

"The first Lark Presents," Gordon said. "A real reader letter, and a Lark answer. We've drafted the answer for speed."

The second page was titled "Lark Says" in a cheerful blue font.

I read it over Robin's shoulder.

It said sleep was a skill, and that CalmLoop, the app of the moment, could help any reader "reclaim her nights in just ten minutes a day."

At the bottom it said, "Lark is proud to partner with CalmLoop."

Robin whispered, "I'm going to be sick."

Marguerite set down the page.

"No," she said.

Gordon smiled.

"I'm sorry?"

"I'll answer her letter. I won't sign this."

"It's a partnership, Marguerite."

"She lost her job in August and she's awake at three a.m. wondering what she did wrong," Marguerite said, level and cold. "I'm not telling her to download something."

"The sponsor is paying forty thousand dollars for that line."

"Then they can buy a different line."
