Chapter 11: Business Stays Out of the Bedroom
The neighbor kept Poppy for the night.
She said her granddaughter was visiting and the girls would build a pillow fort.
I walked my daughter across the dark lawn myself and watched the porch light until the door closed.
When I came back, Ansel was standing in the kitchen with the lights off.
He had taken a mug down from the shelf and set it back twice.
"I'll show you the papers in the morning," he said. "About your father. About the signature."
"I don't want papers."
"Emme."
"I have been angry at you for four years," I said. "I'll be angry at you again tomorrow if I have to. I don't want to be angry tonight."
He looked at me across the dark.
"What do you want tonight?"
"You," I said.
He did not move.
"I'm not drugged, and I'm not grieving, and I'm not confused," I said. "I was put to sleep for seven months, and some of what my body did in that time I will never get back. I want this one, and I want to remember all of it."
His breath went out of him slowly.
"Business stays out of the bedroom," he said, and his voice was rough. "That was your rule."
"Then it isn't business."
I crossed the kitchen and took his face in both hands.
I kissed him.
He made a low sound in his throat, and his arms closed around me so tight my feet left the floor.
He carried me up the stairs.
His bedroom was bare and clean, with a wide bed and a lamp, and a window that looked out on the black lake.
He set me down at the foot of the bed.
I pulled his shirt up over his head and dropped it.
His chest was broad and warm, with an old white scar over the ribs.
