Chapter 15: The Slow Way

"Where are you?" I asked.

"At the end of your road," the doctor said. "In a blue sedan, with the lights off. I've been here since midnight."

I put the phone on speaker and shook Ansel's arm.

He was awake at once.

I pulled my coat on over Ansel's shirt and stepped into my boots.

"Don't come alone," the doctor said. "I don't trust myself alone."

"We're coming."

The sedan sat under the last streetlight, and the man behind the wheel had a gray beard and red eyes.

He had not shaved since Thursday.

I got in the back with my phone recording in my fist.

Ansel stood outside the driver's window with his arms folded.

The doctor spoke to the windshield.

"I saw your face when you read the forged journal," he said. "You did not blink. I have examined four hundred people, and I know what it looks like when someone is lying to me about being well. You were telling me the truth."

"Then why did you write that I was unfit?"

"I had already been paid."

I waited.

"Eighty thousand dollars," he said. "In two envelopes. Your husband gave me the first one at my office in March, with a story about a wife who was getting worse."

"March."

"He asked me to sit in a van outside the Harbor Lantern on the night of the foundation gala. He said you might become upset. He wanted a physician to witness it and write it down."

Ansel's jaw tightened.

"He told you I would scream," I said.

"He told me you would come apart. He said it with such certainty that I believed him. I sat in that van for three hours with the notebook open."

"And I stood behind a pillar and said nothing."
