Chapter 22: Page Forty-One

I got to Poppy before her father could say her name again.

I knelt, picked her up and turned her face into my shoulder.

"Mommy, why does Daddy have handcuffs?"

"Because he did something wrong, baby, and the police are going to talk to him about it."

"Is he in trouble?"

"Yes."

"Did he put the sleepy drops in your tea?"

I held her tighter.

"Yes," I said. "You told the truth, and that was very brave."

I handed her to the neighbor and asked her to take her home.

The otter's head bobbed over the woman's shoulder all the way down the hall.

When they were gone, I put the dead microphone on the floor of the stage, and I went to find my sister.

She was not in the ballroom.

I found her on the terrace at the back, in her cream coat, with the river black and wide below.

She had heard everything through the open doors.

Her tote lay on the stone rail beside her.

She did not turn around.

"I used to think you were so lucky," Camille said.

"I know."

"Dad liked you. He liked you best. You never asked him for anything, and he gave you the shares anyway." Her voice was flat. "I asked for everything, and I got an apartment."

"I bought you that apartment."

"You did. You bought it so you wouldn't have to talk to me."

I did not argue.

"When Dalton looked at me," she said, "I thought, finally. Somebody who sees me first."
