Gran looked at me over her glasses for a long moment.
"Good," she said. "Use the blue cup."
On Sunday the long table in the Beacon Hill dining room was laid for sixteen.
White roses down the middle.
Gold balloons over the sideboard, an eight and a one, because Gran said if she was going to be old she wanted it in writing.
The chandelier was lit, though it was four in the afternoon.
The cellar door in the kitchen stood open, propped with a chair, because Gran had decided she liked it that way.
Her four poker friends came first, in sequins, at a quarter to four, and complained that nobody had put out the cards yet.
The commodore came with flowers he'd clearly bought on the way.
The retired judge brought a bottle of port for the auction and was told the cellar was closed for business.
Three of the outside shareholders came with their wives.
The housekeeper came in a good dress instead of her apron.
Gran had told her that today she was a guest, and if she touched a single plate she was fired.
She sat at Gran's left hand and kept nearly getting up.
Ambrose came in last from the kitchen, with his sleeves rolled and a smear of icing on his wrist.
