Chapter 15: The Signature

Elias had rehearsed every answer except this one.

Damon stood in the rain with the envelope in his hand and did not open it.

"What is it?" he said.

"The assignment of every Harbor Street share to you."

Elias heard his own voice going flat.

"My lawyer notarized it in the lobby at seven this morning, while you slept."

"While I slept," Damon repeated.

"I meant to hand it to you with the coffee. I meant to tell you myself."

"All fifty-two percent," Damon said.

"All of it."

"For what?"

"For nothing," Elias said. "I don't want anything for it."

Rain ran into his collar and down his spine.

He had decided it at four in the morning, lying awake with Damon's weight across his arm, knowing exactly what the morning would cost.

He had decided that if Damon walked, he would at least walk free.

Damon looked at the envelope for a long moment.

Then he took Elias by the front of the soaked shirt, and shoved the paper hard against his chest.

"No."

"Damon," Elias said.

"I don't want to be given a company by the man I'm fucking."

"It isn't a gift. It's yours. It was always..."

"It was always a loan with interest," Damon said. "You told me yourself. I paid it. I'll pay the rest."

His eyes were black and fierce under the rain.

"Nobody who wanted a prize would hand it over in a gutter," he said, lower.
