Chapter 16: The Board

The board of Kosmas Health met on the twelfth floor at nine on Monday, and the room smelled of coffee and carpet and fear.

Damon had been angry for nine nights.

He had spent every one of them in Elias's bed or his own.

Each night he had said "I'm still angry" afterwards into a bare shoulder.

It had not helped the anger at all.

Nine people sat around the long oak table.

Camilla Arkwright sat at the foot of it in a navy suit, with a lawyer on each side and a binder in front of her.

She had lost nothing from her face since Saturday.

Elias sat on Damon's right in the dark grey suit.

Under the table, out of every sightline, Damon's knee was pressed against his, and Elias had not moved it away.

"Meridian's offer is before you," the board chair said. "Dr. Kosmas, you asked to speak first."

Damon stood.

He had operated on the open chests of strangers in front of residents with a quieter pulse.

"Before you vote," he said, "I'm going to tell you who owns this company."

Camilla smiled.

"Harbor Street Capital holds fifty-two percent of Kosmas Health. It lent me my first million when I was twenty-five."

"For five years it has bought every share that came up. I thought it was a small private fund."
