Chapter 23: The Wedding Night
The city clerk who married them was a small tired man in a brown suit, and Damon liked him enormously.
It was the second Saturday in June, and the steps of the municipal building were hot and white under a blue sky.
Forty people stood on them in their good clothes.
Moira Doyle was in the front row in a green dress and a hat, with a handful of tissues.
Beside her sat a thin man of thirty-four with a long scar down his sternum.
A boy and a girl in matching bow ties sat with him, and had been told not to touch anything.
Damon looked at the three of them, and then at the man in front of him, and lost the whole of his carefully memorized opening.
Elias wore a navy suit and no tie.
His hair had been cut that morning, and he had a nick under his chin.
The platinum band on his left hand caught the sun.
"Dr. Kosmas," the clerk said. "You've written your own vows, I'm told."
"I've written them four times."
"Say the fifth."
Damon took Elias's hands.
They were large and dry and perfectly steady, and he held them as he had held them on the stair.
"I made my rules when I was twenty-two," he said.
"I made them because I thought nobody could be trusted with what I'd be afraid to lose."
"You broke them in thirty nights and never raised your voice."
The wind lifted the edge of his jacket.
"I'm not afraid anymore. You had the company for years, and you never once used it on me."
He held on to the hands.
"I'll never use this on you. I will tell you what I want every day, in words, in daylight."
