Chapter 24: Number Eleven
The eleventh box was the same size as the others, wrapped in the same cellophane, with masking tape across the lid.
Damon held it out in both hands.
"I bought it the morning after the corridor," he said.
"I went to the pharmacy on Chambers Street in my scrubs. The clerk asked if I wanted a bag."
"What did you say?" Elias asked.
"I said I had a drawer."
Elias took it.
He turned it over and read the tape, and a sound came out of him that was half a laugh.
In block capitals, in Damon's hand, copying his husband's as best he could, it said: JUNE. ELEVEN.
And under that, smaller: TONIGHT. AGAIN.
"You've been practicing my handwriting."
"For six months," Damon said. "It's terrible."
"It's the worst I've ever seen."
"I'm a surgeon. We don't do capitals."
Elias set the box on the nightstand and swung his legs off the bed.
He looked up at Damon for a long moment, standing naked at the foot of the bed.
The ring was on his hand and the lamp was behind him.
"Come here, Doctor."
"I'm not a doctor tonight."
"You're my husband, and a doctor, and a mess," Elias said. "Come here."
Damon came.
Elias took him by the back of the neck, exactly as he had on the first night.
He walked him down the corridor and through the study door, into the lamplight.
