Chapter 16: Right Hand

"There," Wilder said again, with Dash's fist held over his heart. "It goes there. Circles."

Dash looked down at their hands.

He did the circle, slowly, the way he'd been shown.

"Sorry," he said, and signed it.

"That's right," Wilder said.

"It took me six hours."

"It took Pru's whole club a semester."

Wilder did not let go.

He sat back on his heels on the cold landing, with the fire door humming above them.

"I went to the consult," he said.

"Pru told me."

"Of course she did." His mouth twitched. "She's a menace."

"What did they say?"

"The left is nearly gone. The right will follow in five or ten years." Wilder said it flatly. "They want to put an implant in the left. I said not yet."

"Why?" Dash asked.

"Because I want to keep what I have."

"That's allowed."

"I know it's allowed." Wilder glanced up. "I don't need you to tell me it's allowed."

"I wasn't telling you. I was agreeing."

"You were very close to telling me."

"I was," Dash said, honestly.

Wilder laughed, a small startled breath.

He turned Dash's hand over and held it in both of his.

It was rough from the oar, torn across the palm.

"What did you do?" he said.

"Rowed," Dash said.

"At what?"

"At nothing," Dash said. "Hard."
