Chapter 22: Recused

By Monday afternoon, Tripp Oakes had been suspended for a full year.

The Dean read the notice to the whole of the Haverford House common room, because the Dean was a man who believed in doing hard things in public.

Dash stood at the back with his arm around Wilder's waist.

Nobody in the room looked at them strangely.

Nobody looked at them at all, except in the way people look at a thing they have decided to like.

"He will also forfeit his place in the senior boat," the Dean read. "The Tame List is disbanded. Any funds collected will be returned to their donors or, if unclaimed within thirty days, donated."

"To what?" someone shouted.

"To a cause to be named."

Wilder leaned into Dash's ear, the right one, and spoke softly.

"Say yours."

Dash raised his hand.

"I'd like to name it," he said.

The Dean raised his eyebrows.

"The interpreter fund for the ASL club," Dash said. "Pru Teller's. They've been paying for sign interpreters out of their own pockets for three years."

Pru, across the room, was standing in the doorway with her canvas jacket and her red hair on end.

She went absolutely still.

Then she signed something at Dash, quick and hard, and Wilder snorted.

"What did she say?"
