Chapter 20: The Water
Zhuoran walked down the landing at dawn with the Rain Needle unsheathed and his bare feet on the wet stone.
"Wait," Pingan said, running after him. "You said we'd go together."
"We are. Get a boat."
"Where are you going?"
"Out."
He stepped off the end of the landing and did not sink.
The river took his weight.
Each step left a ring that spread outward and then flattened.
Pingan swore, untied the nearest skiff, and rowed.
He was not a good rower.
He caught a crab, lost an oar and recovered it.
He arrived beside the ghost in the middle of the river with his sleeves soaked to the elbow.
The Ferry King was waiting.
It stood on the water twenty paces away, tall and wet, in torn black and crimson cloth.
In the early light it looked less like a monster and more like a man left out in the rain.
He had been out there a hundred and thirty-one years.
"Brother," it said tenderly. "And the priest. How nice."
"Tell me," said Zhuoran.
"Tell you what?"
