Chapter 24: Office Hours
I went to my husband's office at ten to six on the first Tuesday of the spring term, and I didn't knock.
The door wasn't locked.
The green lamp was on.
He was at the oak desk with a stack of essays and his wire glasses, and he didn't look up.
"Office hours end at six," he said.
"It's five fifty-one."
"Then you have nine minutes."
I closed the door behind me.
The third floor was quiet.
Snow ticked against the tall windows, and the radiator under them knocked twice and settled.
I'd worn my camel coat over the green dress, with my hair in a knot.
The brass key was warm in my pocket from holding it all the way up the hill.
He capped his pen.
He took off his glasses and set them on the essays.
Then he looked at me, and it went through my coat.
The difference was that now I knew what it meant.
"I have a question," I said.
"Ask it."
"Why did you marry me?"
The corner of his mouth moved.
"Because I couldn't breathe when you left a room," he said. "Next question."
"That was the only one I had."
"Then you've got eight minutes left over." He stood up. "What do you want to do with them?"
Footsteps came down the hall.
Slow ones.
They stopped at his door.
We looked at each other.
Neither of us moved for one second.
Then I started to laugh, low, and I couldn't stop it, and his eyes went dark and bright at the same time.
He came around the desk in three strides.
He put his hand on the back of my head, and his fingers slid into my hair.
"Down," he said, very quietly. "Under the desk."
"You're impossible."
"You're laughing."
I was.
I went down anyway, all on my own, with every dare I had in my eyes.
I folded myself into the dark under his big oak desk.
