Chapter 15: Three Snaps

The left tackle came back out of the tunnel with the page in his fist and walked straight down the bench to Gage.

I watched from the front row with my nails in the rail.

Gage took the paper, and his face did not change.

He unfolded it and laid one finger under the first line.

He read it the way he reads everything, slowly, going back over a word.

I knew every letter of it, so I could read his lips.

Brecken stares down the left slot and the safety knows.

He read to the bottom.

Then he looked up into the stands, over the helmets and the band and the whole noisy crowd, and found me in the front row.

He held my eyes for as long as it took to fold the page and put it in his glove.

Then he turned his back and went to find the coach.

The second half started badly.

Brecken threw an incompletion on the first drive and got sacked on the second.

On the third, he stared left, as he had all day, and the safety jumped it and caught the ball.

The student section went quiet.

In the owner's box, the camel coat sat down.

The coach slapped his clipboard against his leg, turned, and looked down the bench at number 7.

"Sullivan," he said.

Gage put on his helmet.

The crowd saw him jog out, and the noise came from the whole stadium at once, a roar that started low and rose.

I wrote nothing.

My pen was in my hand, and I could not move it.

Gage lined up under center for his first snap with Valor State down 17 to 3.
