Chapter 19: The Files
Hallie's POV
I had one earbud in and my phone propped on my knee when Gage's voice came through it, live, from a city I'd just left.
"I do play scared when you're in the stands."
Across the aisle, Brecken stopped smiling.
I listened to all of it.
When he said, "I'm the one who owes her," my hand went over my mouth.
Dale's lie had the right shape because I had been hunting for the shape all week.
The truth had no shape at all.
It was just Gage, shaking, on a sidewalk, telling a city he was sorry on my behalf.
When the call ended, I took the earbud out.
Brecken was looking at me with his head tilted.
"Wow," he said. "He really did that."
"Go away, Brecken."
"I'm only sitting."
"You followed me onto a train."
"I was in Chicago for a recruiting thing." He grinned. "Small world."
"You were at that hotel."
"I'm friends with the family."
He pulled out his phone and turned the screen toward me.
It was an email, sent at nine fifty that night, to the Merit scholarship board and the editor of the campus paper.
It had my name, photographs of my notebook, and an attachment called MESSAGES.
I opened it with my thumb.
A text thread, in my name.
Me: I can move your grade up. Five hundred a week. Don't tell anyone.
Gage: ok
"I never wrote that," I said.
"Doesn't matter. It's got your number on it."
"You faked it."
"Prove it," Brecken said softly. "By the time you do, the board will have read it, and the paper will have run it, and you'll be the tutor who sold the quarterback his grades."
