Chapter 7: Her Bed

He knocked at ten.

Dani had left at nine for the clinic with a loud wink.

The apartment was quiet and small.

It smelled of the candle I'd lit and then blown out, because it looked desperate.

I opened the door in a T-shirt and my glasses.

Gage stood on the landing with rain in his hair and nothing in his hands.

"I thought about bringing flowers," he said. "Then I thought, she'd tell me what they cost."

"Eleven dollars at the grocery store."

"See?" He stepped inside, and I shut the door and leaned on it. "Hi."

"Hi."

"Are you nervous?"

"Yes."

"Good. So am I."

I laughed, and then he kissed me, and the laugh went somewhere else.

It was slow this time. He had promised slow, and he kept the promise.

His hands went into my hair, then down my back.

He walked me down the hall by kissing me, until my legs hit the edge of my bed.

"Can I see you?" he said against my mouth.

I answered by pulling my shirt over my head.

He looked at me, and I wanted to cross my arms, and I didn't.

"Glasses stay on," he said, very low. "I want you to watch."

"I'll watch."

"Good girl."

He took his time with the rest.

He undid my bra with one hand and let it fall.

He put his mouth on my breast, and I arched up off the mattress.

His tongue was warm. His stubble scraped, a little, and it was perfect.

I pulled at his shirt, and he reached back and dragged it off in one motion.

There was all of him in the lamplight.

The broad chest, the dark ink down his arm and the old scar across his shoulder were all there to see.

I put my palm over the scar.

"That's from Marlow," he said. "You don't get to stare at it."

"I've charted that game four times."
