Chapter 10: Popcorn

I went to the east bleachers alone.

It was a gray afternoon, and the football team was running drills on the far field.

The girl in the squad jacket was already sitting on the top row with her knees pulled up, picking at a pompom.

She flinched when my shoes rang on the metal.

"Thanks for coming," she said.

"Why are you telling me?"

"Because I helped."

She said it to her knees.

"I didn't edit it, I swear."

"But I was standing next to her at the sound table the morning of the rally, and she was doing something on her phone."

"She told me it was a surprise for Cade."

"What was the surprise?"

"I thought it was a love note."

Her voice cracked.

"Then I saw the screen in the gym."

"Did you see what she did to the text?"

"I saw her thumb moving over the bubbles."

"I can't prove it, Demi."

"She made me delete the chat from my phone on Friday night, and she watched me do it."

"The only copy is hers."

"Then why risk telling me?"

She finally looked at me.

Her eyes were wet and furious.

"Because I've been Paisley's friend since fifth grade, and I watched her print three hundred sheets of paper on the school copier at six in the morning."

"I held the tape."

"I didn't know what it was until I was already holding it."

She wiped her face with the back of her wrist.

"I need a few days to find the original."

"Don't text me about it."
