By Wednesday the video had a hundred and twelve thousand views, and my name was in the comments.
Strangers had given me a nickname.
A girl in the cafeteria line wore a gold paper dollar sign on her shirt and smiled at me over her tray.
A boy I had never spoken to made a quiet cash register noise as I passed him in the hall.
Someone had written PAY UP in the dust on my locker door.
I stood there with my fist on the handle.
Every part of me wanted to go home, lock the attic window, and let the beagle sit on my feet until January.
"We could skip the rest of the day," Cade said beside me.
"My dad would drive us to the lake."
"If I leave, they win," I said.
"Demi, nobody keeps score."
"Paisley does."
I looked at him, and I made the decision right there with my hand on the dusty metal.
"I'm not going to hide," I said.
"I'm going to talk."
"To who?"
"To everybody."
