Chapter 14: The Torn Check

The whole ballroom watched him come.

He didn't hurry.

He walked between the tables with his hat in his hand.

He went past the white roses and the crystal and the governor's wife with her mouth open.

People looked down at him as he passed.

Somebody laughed, quietly.

He didn't look at any of them.

He was looking at me.

Strother stepped out from behind the little table.

"Well, if it ain't the ranch hand," he said loudly. "Who let you in, son? Kitchen's out back."

The laugh got bigger.

Andrés came down from the head table and stood beside me.

He put his hand on my waist.

"Mr. Bennett," he said, smooth and pleasant. "You've come to congratulate us. How kind."

Clyde stopped in front of the signing table.

He looked up at Andrés, then at Strother.

Then at me.

"Ma'am," he said. "Before you sign that, you ought to see what Roscoe sent me."

"Oh, here we go." Strother spread his arms to the room. "He's going to cry poor. He took my money, folks. Forty thousand dollars to let a photographer onto his porch."
