Chapter 15: Bail

The troopers walked him out through the middle of the ballroom.

I went after them.

Elena caught my wrist. "Majesty. The cameras."

"Good," I said, and pulled free.

Andrés said something behind me. I didn't hear it.

I went down the white steps of the Governor's Mansion in my gold gown.

The patrol car was pulling away from the curb.

Clyde's face was in the back window.

He was looking at me.

The television crews on the sidewalk swung their lights around.

"Your Majesty! Your Majesty, is it true the cowboy attacked Señor Montenegro?"

"No," I said. "Señor Montenegro attacked him. You were filming. Look at your tape."

My guard captain came down the steps behind me.

He had my coat over his arm and the car keys in his hand.

"Where are they taking him?" I asked.

"Travis County jail, Majesty. On Tenth Street."

"Take me there."

He didn't argue this time.

He didn't even look back at the house for Elena.

The jail was a gray concrete building with yellow lights and a bail bond office across the street with a neon sign.
