Chapter 20: The Bull in Olancho
"Ma'am," Clyde said, up at the stage.
His voice carried in the quiet. It always did.
"Brought you something."
Andrés laughed into the live microphone.
"Is this a circus now? Somebody get that animal out of the arena."
Nobody moved.
I went down the stage steps.
Elena said my name. I didn't stop.
I walked out into the dirt in my cotton dress, past the judges' box, until I was standing in front of Clyde and the bull.
Up close, his cheek still had a yellow shadow where Andrés had hit him.
He looked tired and rumpled from sleeping in a truck.
He looked wonderful.
"How did you get here?" I said.
"Boat from Houston to Puerto Cortés. Then a cattle truck over the mountains." He scratched Domino between the ears. "Took nine days. He didn't care for the boat."
"Clyde. The sale is Tuesday."
"I know when the sale is."
He turned and pointed back at the gate.
Through it I could see the road, and on the road, a line of stock trailers with their ramps already down.
Gray backs moved inside them. I heard a bull bawl.
