Chapter 4: Ninety Days
Cora did not touch the certificate.
"I don't want your stock," she said. "I want to know what you want for it."
Ronan Keane sat down at Pearl's table, and the chair complained.
"A proxy, for ninety days," he said. "You vote my shares. Then you work for Keane Capital as a consultant, and tell me what Maddox Systems is worth without you."
"You already know," Cora said. "You watched the interview."
"I want it in writing from the person who built it."
Pearl set a bowl of dumplings in front of him without being asked.
He looked at it, and then he ate.
Cora studied his tattooed hands on the spoon.
Every man who had ever been kind to her had wanted the engine.
Brent had wanted it, at twenty-three, over cheap wine in a garage, when he said she was a genius and held her face.
This one wanted it too, and at least he said so.
"My terms," she said.
"Go on."
"Everything I build from today is mine. Your name goes on no line of it."
"Fine," Ronan said.
"You never speak for me. Not to the press, not to a board, not to him."
"Fine."
"And you don't touch me."
He stopped chewing.
Pearl made a small noise into her dish towel.
"I mean it," Cora said, and felt her face go warm, which annoyed her. "Nobody touches anybody. It's business."
Ronan looked at her over the spoon for a moment.
"Ninety days," he said. "Nobody touches anybody."
He did not smile, but something at the corner of his mouth moved.
He held out his hand across the table.
She looked at it.
It was a large hand, scarred across the knuckles, with black ink running up the wrist under the cuff.
