Chapter 5: His Name

Coralie's POV

"I didn't know," I said.

Colton's chair lay on its back on the carpet.

Nobody had picked it up.

"You're in a photo with her fiancé, with your tongue practically in his mouth, and you didn't know?"

"I knew a man named Winslow. I didn't know he had a last name."

"That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard," said the pilot.

Brynn sat very still with her hands in her lap, crying without a sound.

"It's all right," she said, so softly that everyone leaned in. "I'm not angry. You didn't know."

"She's lying, Brynn," said Colton. "Nobody sleeps with a man for a month without learning his name."

Dalton rose, slow and cold, with both hands flat on the table.

"Coralie. Did he know who you were?"

"I don't know."

"Then you're either a fool or you're a plant," said Dalton. "I'll decide which later."

The doorbell rang.

It rang once, calmly.

The housekeeper hurried in, and her face was strange.

"Mr. Livingstone, there's a gentleman. He says he's here for Coralie. He gave his name as Taft."

Every head turned to the door.

He walked in with his coat open and his hands at his sides.

He had not brought flowers.

He had not brought his assistant, or a lawyer, or an apology.

He walked straight to the foot of the table and stopped beside my chair.

"Good evening," said Winslow. "I'm Winslow Taft."

Colton made a short, ugly laugh.

"You've got nerve."

"I've got a name," said Winslow. "I'd like to correct something in front of everyone."

He turned to Brynn.

"Miss Livingstone, I'm sorry for any confusion. I've never agreed to marry you. I've signed nothing, and nobody has asked me anything."
