By the second Saturday of June, every string in the Broadwood was on but the bass.

The pinblock held and the flue was dry.

The middle of the keyboard sang so cleanly that my father wept at it once and blamed the dust.

The Dowager's ladies came up the drive in four carriages before noon.

I watched from the music room window with a tuning fork in my fist.

"Six of them," Everard said behind me.

I had not heard him come in.

"And their mothers."

"A dozen women, and one of them is meant to make you a duchess."

"I've told my mother who is going to be the duchess."

"You have not told me."

"I have asked you five times and not a word of it has been wasted."

"Then you know my answer."

"I know every one of them," he agreed, and put his hands on my shoulders and his mouth on the back of my neck.

I leaned against him.

"Go and be introduced," I said. "She'll send a footman."

"I'd rather be introduced to you."

"We've met."
