Chapter 16: The First Night
The pin fell out of her hair and rolled across the floor, and neither of them looked.
She kissed him again, harder.
He made a low sound in his chest and drew her onto his lap, careful of the bandage.
She straddled his thighs on the narrow bench with her robe hiked to her knees.
His hand spread across her back.
It was a big, rough hand, and it held her as though she might break.
"Not like that," she said against his mouth.
"How, then?"
"Like you mean it."
He laughed, a short helpless breath, and his grip changed.
He pulled her flush against him, and she felt the whole hard length of him through the thin cloth between them.
Her body knew exactly what to do with that.
She rocked once, slowly, and watched his eyes darken.
"Shuyao."
"I am here," she said. "I'm asking."
"You are not a girl in a dream. I know that."
"Then look at me properly."
He looked.
Her dark green robe had slipped from one shoulder.
Her hair had come down, black and heavy, to her waist.
She was eighteen, tall, strong and flushed, and she did not look away.
His breath shook.
"Properly," he said, and his voice was rough as gravel.
She pushed the gray robe off his good shoulder.
Under it, the lamplight showed his chest, lean and scarred and heavily muscled, rising fast.
She put her mouth to the hollow of his throat and felt his pulse jump against her lips.
His hand came up and cradled the back of her head.
