Chapter 21: The Cup Again

The Noble Consort's palace had been decorated in red for the bride.

Red lanterns, red silk on the pillars, a red cloth on the long table in the sitting hall.

Twenty ladies sat in rows on cushions, in their best silks.

Shuyao walked between them in her green robe with her grandmother on her arm.

She had not worn the wedding red.

She had not worn the ring.

"Our bride is here," said the Consort warmly. "Come, sit. Wanrou has been planning this evening for days."

Wanrou rose from her seat at the Consort's right.

She wore peach silk and a pearl comb.

Her smile was gentle and sweet and a little shy.

"Cousin," she said. "I'm so glad you came."

"I wouldn't miss it."

"I wanted to make peace before tomorrow. May I serve you?"

"Please."

Wanrou went to the low side table and poured, with both hands, from a white teapot into a cup.

It was a small cup, blue porcelain, with a white plum blossom painted on the side.

Shuyao's chest went cold.

She knew that cup.

She had held it in her last hour in a gray yard, with a Prince in white and gold watching from a platform.
