Chapter 24: The Banner
The Emperor received them lying down.
He was propped on cushions in his bedchamber, thin as a reed.
The physician stood at his elbow, and a yellow screen was drawn across the window.
Shuyao and Qin knelt side by side with a lacquer box each.
"Open them," he said.
She lifted the lid of the Tang box.
The bronze tiger lay on its red silk, its mouth open, a crack of green along one flank.
Qin opened the Qin box.
A second tiger, smaller, with a missing ear.
"Two armies," said the Emperor. "One in the west, one in the north."
"Each has a half in my hand and a half in yours."
"For four years I have been afraid of what my son might do with either."
"Majesty."
"I have no son now. I have a nephew of twelve, who will sit on a throne he does not want."
"I will not leave him with two armies and no one to trust."
He fixed his eyes on Shuyao.
"The west stays with the Marquis Tang. When he is old, it goes to his son."
"When his son is old, I have a note in my sleeve that says it goes to his sister."
Her breath caught.
