Chapter 18: Article Nine
The boardroom was on the eleventh floor, with a glass wall and a table that seated twenty.
I had not been invited.
I came up in the elevator behind Lydia anyway, in my good black pants and a sweater Deborah had pressed for me without being asked.
"You don't have to do this," Lydia said.
"I know."
"The chairman will eat you."
"He can try," I said. "I'm used to dogs."
She laughed, one short breath, and squeezed my arm.
The chairman sat at the head of the table, a silver-haired man in a gray suit with a pen he turned over and over.
Three other directors sat along the sides, and Silvan stood at the far end by the window, because a vote on his own seat meant he wasn't allowed to sit in it.
He saw me in the doorway.
His face did something complicated and then went still.
"This is a closed session," said the chairman.
"I'm the person you're discussing," I said. "I think I'm allowed to listen."
He looked at Lydia.
"Let her stay," Lydia said. "She's family under the Act, and you know it."
"Under the Act." The chairman set his pen down. "Fine. Let it be in the minutes."
He opened a folder.
"Gentlemen, Ms. Hallam. Article nine of the Hallam charter holds that the chief executive must be in a registered marriage in good standing. Three weeks ago Mr. Hallam was matched. Yesterday he filed to release that match, and last night he told a television camera he obtained it by a private request."
"I told the truth," Silvan said.
"You told it in public, to a reporter, while a complaint is open against your wife. I move that we find Mr. Hallam out of good standing and remove him from the chair."
Nobody spoke.
