Chapter 4: March Third

I left the chain on the door.

"Who gave you my room number?"

"Nobody. I knocked on every door that had a light on." The woman in the camel coat gave a small, shaky laugh. "Levi wanted to send a lawyer. I told him no."

"Where is he?"

"In the car, in the lot. He promised to stay there."

I looked past her shoulder.

The black car sat across the lot with a man behind the wheel who was very carefully not looking at my door.

"You're Margaret Hartwell."

"Yes."

"I saw your photo on his phone."

"I know. He sent it ahead, which was a mistake. I would have asked him not to." She held her right hand out in front of her, palm up, and left it there. "I won't come in. I won't touch you unless you tell me I can. I only wanted you to see this."

The little finger on her hand was bent at the top joint.

I put my own hand next to hers through the gap in the door.

It was the same finger. The same bend. The same shape of the nail.

Neither of us said anything.

I took the chain off the door.

She didn't rush in. She stood on the walkway with her hand still out until I took it.

Her fingers were cold. They held on hard.

"I'm sorry," she said. "I rehearsed something in the car. It's gone."

"That's okay."

"I'm supposed to say that I'm not here to take anything from you. I'm not here to make you move or sign or call me anything. I just wanted to look at you."
