Chapter 10: What He Asked For
Demelza walked into Hoyt's bedroom with her hair still full of straw.
She had not stopped to comb it.
The Beta had led her up the back stairs without a word, past two guards who would not meet her eyes.
At the door he stopped.
"He asked for you alone," he said. "Miss Rook won't leave."
"I didn't expect her to."
The room was the Alpha's room, with the big carved bed and the tall windows facing the valley.
The curtains were drawn.
The air smelled of sweat and medicine and something sour underneath.
Hoyt lay propped on three pillows with the blanket up to his chest.
He looked ten years older than he had four days ago.
His hair had gone dull at the temples, and the gold ring hung from his thumb by a loop of tape.
Daphne sat at his bedside with a cup in her hands.
It was a blue cup.
Demelza looked at it, and Daphne saw her look.
"Demelza," Hoyt whispered. "You came."
"Your Beta said you were asking."
"I am." His eyes were glassy. "I'll be quick. I can't stand."
"I'd heard."
"It hurts. All the time." His voice cracked. "It's the rejection. It hasn't closed. You have to take it back."
"Take what back?"
"The pain. The words. Say you didn't accept." He tried to sit up and failed. "You can undo it. The Council doesn't have to know. We'll say it was a misunderstanding."
Demelza stood at the foot of the bed with her arms folded.
"You said it yourself," she said. "In front of a hundred wolves. You said it clearly."
