Chapter 15: Nice Is Not Kind

"The tea was valerian and moonwort," Daphne said. "Seven o'clock, every night, in the blue cup."

Nobody in the great room moved.

She stood in the middle of the ring of wolves with oil dripping from her hem, and she said it to Demelza's face.

"Before moonrise, every night," Daphne said.

Demelza's eyes went to the porch, and Hoyt would not lift his.

"You sat with me every night," Demelza said, turning back.

"I sat with you so you'd drink it."

A woman near the fireplace made a low sound of disgust.

"I took your letters to the post box and burned them," Daphne said. "Hoyt's stopped coming because he stopped writing. I wrote the three that came, in his hand."

"Why?"

"Because I was nobody." The words came out flat and fast. "I was a household Omega with a mop. The old Alpha said if I kept you quiet until Hoyt was strong, I'd be Luna of this pack."

"And Hoyt?"

"Hoyt said yes before his father finished asking."

On the porch, Hoyt made a small noise and shut his eyes.

"Say the rest," Rafe said.

"What rest?"

"The mate claim."

Daphne's head turned.

"There isn't one," she said. "There never was. I said I was his true mate because a true mate can't be sent away. I thought nobody would ask to see a wrist."

A voice at the doors said, dryly, "I did."

The Council envoy stood in the smoke in his grey coat, with his leather folio under one arm.

He had been staying at the inn in the village.

He had come up the hill when the bell rang, and from the look of him, he had been standing there for some time.

"Miss Rook," he said. "I'll record that you've admitted claiming a bond you do not hold, before a hundred witnesses."
