Chapter 20: The Last Petition
The hearing began at dawn, on the grass beside the standing stones, with mist still lying in the bowl.
Half the Gathering stayed to watch.
They sat on blankets along the slopes with their coffee, and the Brocklehurst wolves stood in a solid block on the north side.
Hoyt had been brought down in his chair.
He wore the same plain shirt, and he held a single sheet of paper in both hands.
The envoy sat at the trestle table with the Council's seal in front of him.
"Mr. Brocklehurst. State your petition."
"MacShane Ridge was the Brocklehurst pack's by betrothal." Hoyt's voice was dry, but it carried. "The charter says it reverts to her if the bond ends by the Alpha's word, freely given."
"It does."
"My word wasn't free."
A ripple of disbelief ran around the bowl.
"I was manipulated," Hoyt said. "I was pushed to speak it. The Kincaid pack had the charter copy and came to my Hall the very night, with a coat ready for her. They planned the whole thing."
"Planned what?"
"To take the Ridge." He pointed across the grass, and his hand shook. "Alpha Kincaid, tell them you wanted her. Tell them you've wanted her since the Harvest Moon."
Rafe stood up on the Kincaid slope.
"I'll tell them," he said.
The envoy's pencil stopped.
"I came to your Hall because you invited me to witness an announcement, and I thought it was going to be a wedding," Rafe said. "I carried the charter copy because my pack holds it, and I had a bad feeling about a man who left his mate for a year and sent for the neighbors the night he came home."
"So you knew."
