Chapter 22: Earned

The Kincaid Beta was a tall, tired woman with a braid down her back and her arms folded.

"Our Alpha made his choice without us," she said. "He didn't ask one of us first."

Rafe, on the porch, opened his mouth.

"I'm not talking to you," she said. "I'm talking to her."

Demelza folded her arms too.

"Go on."

"We want to know why he did it. Was it for you?"

Eighty wolves waited on the Ridge road.

It was bitterly cold, and their breath hung in the air.

"No," said Demelza.

Rafe went still.

"He did it because he couldn't stand to be a man who hid it," she said. "I didn't ask him to, and I'd have stopped him if I'd known. He did it for himself, because he could not live with it."

The Beta looked at her for a long moment.

"That's what we hoped," she said.

She turned to the pack.

"Hands. Who says we keep him?"

The hands came up slowly, then all together.

Then one of them, an old man at the back, called out, "And the censure?"

"What about it?"

"It's the whole pack's, isn't it? He didn't know it all by himself. Ten days, and half the valley knew his temper was off, and nobody asked him why."

A rustle went through the rows.

The Beta nodded slowly.

"The Kincaid pack takes the censure beside him," she said. "Every name, on the same page. If the Council wants his vote, they can have eighty of ours as well."

Rafe came down the porch steps.
