Chapter 20: Rogues
Caelen shifted at a dead run and hit the east fence in the middle of a pack of strangers.
They were rogues, thin and filthy, with no pack scent on them at all, and there were more than a dozen.
They had come over the wire in the dark, and one Stormvale boy already lay in the grass with his leg bent the wrong way.
Caelen took the nearest rogue by the shoulder and threw him.
The torn muscle in his own shoulder screamed.
He heard a growl at his left and did not turn his head.
He did not need to, because the bond had told him where she was.
It was a plain, bright knowledge.
Willa was twelve feet away, a sandy-brown wolf low in the grass, and he knew without looking that she was about to spring at the big rogue circling the fallen boy.
He moved to meet it.
She went high, he went low, and the rogue's legs went out from under him as her jaws closed on his scruff.
They had never fought together in their lives.
Caelen had never felt anything like it.
The two of them seemed to share a single set of eyes.
He could feel the weight of her hind legs gathering before she jumped.
He knew her breath, and her angle, and which rogue she meant to take next.
She seemed to know his, too.
When a snarling grey male came for his bad side, she was already there.
The fight lasted perhaps four minutes.
When it ended, five rogues lay quiet in the grass.
The rest had gone back over the wire in a scatter of shadows, and Kirk's wolves howled them out of the valley.
Caelen shifted back, naked and gasping in the cold.
His shoulder was open again. Blood ran down his arm and dripped from his fingers.
