Chapter 8: The Roommate Rule
He held my hand for a long time.
Then he let go and stood up and put the chair back under the bench.
"Go to bed," he said.
He walked out.
I stayed another hour and got nowhere.
In the morning I went to the dorm office.
It was on the first floor of the administration building, past the mail room.
A woman behind the counter had a stack of forms and a phone that kept ringing.
"I want a room transfer," I said.
She pulled a form out of the tray without looking up.
"Reason?"
"Roommate conflict."
"Any violence?"
"No."
"Any property damage?"
"No."
"Any theft?"
"No."
She put the form on the counter and clicked her pen.
"Then it's a preference transfer. Those go to the bottom of the list."
"How long is the list?"
"Sixty-two."
I looked at the form.
"Sixty-two people waiting?"
"Sixty-two requests. Most of them for the rooms with the private bathroom. There's only one of those." She looked up at me for the first time. "Which one are you in?"
"Fourteen B."
She stopped writing.
"Fourteen B."
"Yes."
"The one with the bathroom."
"Yes."
She put her pen down.
"Who's your roommate?"
"Lu Chen."
She sat back in her chair.
"Then I can't move you."
"Why not?"
"Because that room is assigned to two people and both of them have to sign the transfer request."
"I'll sign it."
"He has to sign it too."
"Then give me the form and I'll get him to sign it."
She looked at me for a second.
Then she pushed the form across the counter and went back to her phone.
