Chapter 14: The Wardrobe Mistress
The girl with the granola bars knew where the wardrobe mistress lived.
"She retired in March," she told me in the stairwell before class. "Philippa never threw her a party."
"Why would that matter?"
"Because she sewed every ribbon in that building for thirty years. She sewed yours on your first week."
I remembered a small woman with a thimble on a chain around her neck.
She had looked at my worn-out shoes and said, "Whoever taught you to darn did it with spite. I like that."
I skipped morning class, which probation did not allow, and went anyway.
Her apartment sat above a bakery, up a staircase that smelled of yeast.
She opened the door on the chain.
She looked at me, then at the grey silk bundle I was holding, and her face changed.
"Fenner," she said. "I wondered how long it would take."
