Chapter 16: Dress Rehearsal
Sutton read the photo of the yellow page twice, standing in the stage-left wing, and said nothing.
Her thumb moved over Philippa's signature.
"Not now," she said at last. "Dance first. Then I will ruin all of them."
The dress rehearsal began at two.
The whole company sat in the house with their legs over the seats, watching the full run in costume, and the orchestra pit held a piano and a nervous man with a metronome.
Philippa sat in the front row with her cane across her knees.
Lydia sat three seats down from her, in the aisle, in her own coat.
She was smiling at the stage.
Sutton's pointes had been on the wing table since the half-hour call, a fresh pair, the ribbons coiled on top.
Nobody had touched them.
I had watched them from the stage while the whole company warmed up in front of me.
At least twenty people had watched me.
The lights came up cold and blue.
The music pulled back over the stones, and we walked toward each other from opposite corners.
