Chapter 19: Lydia's Mother
Mrs. Maddox walked to the front of the room.
"Two million dollars," she said, "to the academy's endowment. For the artists' fund, in my daughter's name."
She held the check up between two fingers.
"I only ask that this board consider what it is about to destroy for the sake of a rumor."
Somebody in the second row said "Goodness."
Six hands that had been rising began, one at a time, to drift down.
I watched it happen.
It was the worst thing I had seen in that building, and I had seen a lot.
"The board will adjourn," Wallace said, hoarsely. "The vote is postponed until after the premiere."
"Wallace," Sutton said.
"I cannot suspend her alone, Sutton. It takes seven."
The room broke into clusters, murmuring, and the donors streamed out to the hall.
I followed Mrs. Maddox.
I was not the only one.
In the corridor outside Studio A, beside the framed photographs of forty years of ballets, she turned with the check still in her hand and found my mother standing in front of her.
