Chapter 14: The Kitchen Table
Paulina's POV
I was wearing Mateo's gray sweatshirt, my black skirt from the night before and no shoes.
"Stay," he whispered, and pulled the blanket up over his bare chest. "I'll talk to her."
"I'm not hiding in your basement."
"Paulina."
"I'm thirty-five years old and I have run a kitchen for nine years," I said. "I can walk up a flight of stairs."
I went up barefoot.
The kitchen at the top was small and yellow, with a table under an oilcloth, a rooster clock and a saint on the windowsill.
Mateo's mother stood at the stove with her back to me.
She was small and square, in black clogs and a white shirt.
A hairnet was balled up in the pocket of her jacket on the chair.
She did not turn around.
She took three cups down from a hook, one at a time.
She filled them from a coffee pot that had clearly been on since yesterday.
Then she set all three on the table in a row and pointed with her chin at the chair across from the stove.
"Siéntate," she said.
I sat.
Mateo came up behind me in jeans and a T-shirt put on backward, with his hair standing straight up.
